Alberta has now officially moved into Fall. With the change in temperature & colors, we are entering into the final stages of landscaping before transitioning into the winter months.

Now is the time to execute the three "P's" for spring - Planning, Prepping & Planting.

Plan your vision of your "Spring" yard. What colors are you attracted to? What organic texture draws your attention?

Purchasing bulbs/trees/shrubs native to the area for spring growth is important. Choose wisely for success - and don't forget the fertilizer!

The time frame for planting is vital to ensure correct flowering time & to ensure trees/shrubs enter their dormant period for the winter.

Bulbs should be planted mid-September - early November (at the latest). SnowDogz favorite bulbs for springtime blooming are:

  • Crocus
  • Daffodils
  • Scillas
  • Tulips

And not to forget about the trees & shrubs! Fall is the perfect time plant! The warm soil with the cooler air stimulates root growth to assist in getting established before the ground freezes. Trees & shrubs need to be watered every day for the first week after planting, and every 2 - 3 days afterwards until the ground freezes. Additionally, watering trees to "freeze" the water in for the winter will ensure the tree has an adequate water supply during the spring thaw.

There are a variety of trees & shrubs which grow well in Alberta. Our favorites are:

  • Birch
  • Evergreen
  • Ivory Silk
  • Spruce
  • Willow
  • Azelia
  • Bareberry
  • Burning Bush
  • Potenilla
